Adventures in Restaurant Week: The Birdsall House

Earlier in the week, a loon at The Birdsall House told me that the restaurant was not participating in Hudson Valley's Restaurant week on Saturdays.

It was utter madness and as we found out later that week, it turned out to be completely untrue.

It was a good thing we decided to eat there on Saturday too because at $20.95 for a three course meal, it was not only really good but it was also a ton of food.

After eating, I felt as though I had robbed them.

To start with, H1 had the chicken liver pate with a cherry compote type thing.

Dragon Quest H1 Or 2: The Wishing for Dim Sum

Instead of going to Dim Sum , we are unfortunately stuck at home today on this gloomy, rainy Saturday.  I love days like these but dim sum is good times too.

So, in lieu of dim sum, I will just have to send my warrior to Dragon Quest his way over to Chinatown for Dim Sum in my stead.  Hopefully he won't run into any dragons, won't don any cursed armour (well, if he does just to hear that music then he can do that) and gets lucky destroying some metal slimes on his way there.

I think he's lost
Happy Early Cruel April Fool's to you too, Google.

Quote of the Day

H1 and I had quite the long day at the office yesterday and ended up taking a car home.

Maybe it was the late night craziness but for some reason we got to talking about window sill pies.

In my mind, I imagine pies sitting on window sills to cool down to be one type and one type only: Smurfberry pie.

It was then H1 revealed what I can only imagine to be a deep, dark secret that she had been harbouring for years.

"I always envision that smurfberries probably taste like swedish fish," she said, with all honesty.

In my mind, I think raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries or even ribena berries but...swedish fish?

Oh, H1.

You are out of your smurfin' mind.

Or perhaps I just lack creativity.

Smurf.

Happy Anniversary, N3DS!

Today marks the one year anniversary of the North American release of the Nintendo 3DS.

Usually, I don't care about such things but Nintendo sent me a little present today and since we're all in the mood to celebrate, I decided to take a look at what I've done with Zarnyx: The 3DS Edition in the past year.

When I first got little bluesey N3DS, he was bought with not much fanfare.  In fact, I deliberately canceled my pre-order at Amazon just so I could waltz into Nintendo World to pick up one from the herd from the damned source!

I'm not that obsessed over Nintendo but I was looking for some sort of freebie.  Nintendo World is glorious at freebies, so I was hoping for something awesome!

It turns out I got diddly-squat.

"These Guys are Amaze-Balls"

Amaze-Balls = When the use of "ing" does not aptly express the level of supreme awesome once wishes to convey.

So was the term used to describe The Black Keys by new friends we made on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

And the term shall be used henceforth when needed.

Personally, I would not call them "amaze-balls" myself because while my ticket said I had purchased pit tickets for The Black Keys, in my heart (and as obvious to every unmoving body in that place except for The HOchieS') I was there for Arctic Monkeys.

That's not a discredit to The Black Keys though because they were pretty damned good themselves.

The Low-Lamps:

1.  Again with the crowd.  I was surprised that so few people were there for Arctic Monkeys.  And of the ones that were who just wanted to get to the front of the stage, they were hella' crap.  I suppose they were not there for Arctic Monkeys and couldn't care less to dance or sing along but that was some disappointing and shocking crud, if I do say so.  Oh, hipsters.  You're so fickle, self-righteous and self-indulgent, aren't you? Yeah? Yeah.

Another Round of Ass-Hattery

The abuse continues in this installment of Fortune Cookie Ass-hattery.

In this first fortune, there's not much abuse to be found here.  I did reflect on the number of new people I've met and have tried to think of what realizations or big issues have come along with meeting them.  Then it hit me that the fortune is rubbing it in my face.  We met A of Kels and A fame, who we recently met up with during their honeymoon trip.  The big realization was the fact that here in the U.S.A. unlike Australia and other countries, we do not have the option to book World Trip tickets.

Animal Uprising at the Bronx Zoo: Part III with The Ploy of Polar Puppies, Snow Leopards and the Most Fly Turtle EVA'

Leaving the alligators, crocodiles and all-seeing Madagascan animals behind, we made our way to the great outdoors to visit our friend the Polar Bear.

The polar bear was in a fabulous, playful mood though truth be told, he usually is.  Today though, he lured in his victims with his secret plans and clever tricks.

And while those other fools were "oooo-ing" and "aaahh-ing", I was quietly taking pictures and keeping one eye open, readying myself to run the hell out of there if need be.  Note: Please click the pictures to enlarge.

The Anxiety of Spring

Once again Spring is upon us and once again, I start getting anxiety ridden.  The thought of Summer around the corner is enough to make this Autumn and Winter loving girl feel sick!

In fact, I am actually home today with a cold.

I'm fairly certain the coming of Spring had nothing to do with that but rather the sickness blame game could be placed on the germs of others.

We are well into a day and then some into Spring 2012 so we are saying "The Party's Done, Winter Party Girl; So Get the Heck Out!".

Apparently she kept it upbeat a little too well in NYC because we barely had a winter in which to mourn dark, snowy and freezing nights.  I'm sure H1 would say that you did a fine job in that regard but I say, watch me ever utilize you for a blog banner again.

Let us take a moment to remember her happy face and her booming boom box...

Aaaaannnnnd...there she goes.

That's right, I said to get out.
Instead, let's say hi to Spring here at the HOchieS' Blog.  Let's say hi to its allergens, its blossoms, its warmer days, its rainy disposition and its bees.

Awww....my bees.

Happy Spring, Everyone.

Animal Uprising at the Bronx Zoo: Part II with Our Scaly Brethren, Some Birds and a Misrepresentation of Madagascar

When you last left the HOchieS, they were headed towards the den of some bears after hurrying out of vicinity of the Baboon Cafe where trouble was a-brewing.

After making a narrow escape from crushing hugs and not partaking in honey, we found ourselves at the Reptile House.

It was there we found some anxious turtles and witnessed a turtle throwdown.

Animal Uprising at the Bronx Zoo: Part I with Peacocks, Lions, Bears, A Baboon Cover-up and Crazy Gods.

There was something definitely going on at the Bronx Zoo this past Saturday.

From restless animals to the questionable findings of a mysterious substance which can only be described as evidence from a suspected scene of a crime, H1 and I were fearful for our lives.

Along the way through many of the exhibits, we managed to capture some decent pictures of the animals.  Please feel free to click the images to enlarge and join us for a visual aid to the Animal Uprising.

Looks like an exciting adventure!
The day started off okay.  We shared a mini Irish breakfast which we wolfed down in the car but it was upon leaving the car in the Asia Parking Lot at the Zoo that we discovered we were being stalked.

What.

Happy Birthday to Two of Our Frenemies

There are two birthdays to celebrate today with wishes going out to Beetchie and CLee.

CLee, we did not get you a prezzie, much less a prezzie of some smug Apple product.

Beetchie, I am too lazy to go take a picture of your prezzie to post it on the blog.

We're wonderful frenemies, aren't we?

Happy Birthday!

Happy H1's Day!

Happy St. Patty's Day to all!

On this day, everyone should be celebrating H1's day unless you would like to be given the evil eye.  Such is the fate I met this morning when I needed to be reminded that I had not wished her greetings today.

It was scary for me.

Anyway, everyone's a little bit Irish on St. Patty's Day! This is why we spent our day eating St. Patty's Day Dim Sum.

What's that? You find that sentiment ridiculous and not very Irish of us?

If you don't think about it too much, it makes perfect sense.  Plus I'm hoping the lot of you are so drunk from your own bastardizations of St. Patty's Day activities that every thing I say is a sensible green... Green like the money you're about to give me.  Hooray!

...

If you are reading this while you're sober then please enjoy these dim sum pictures I took at our trip to Aberdeen, a dim sum house located in White Plains.  They're expensive as all hell and it's not the best dim sum I've put into my mouth but they're decent and close enough for me to keep visiting.  I may have spoken about them in the past but I can't recall.

Pork spare rib tips (upper right), soup dumplings (upper left), shrimp dumplings and a pot of tea.  Figure out which is which from that! ...

A Funny Thing This

Today, you should have all been watching your back.  In fact, you should all be watching your back still as it is still the Great Ides of March.

For those of you who live in countries in which the date is now March 16th, please breathe easy.

A funny thing I discovered though last week is that one of our good friends, Daniraj Pinaprap, celebrates his birthday on the Ides!

So Happy Birthday to him!

He's quite the funny fellow and that's exactly the kind of positive attitude one should have on this the most feared of days.

I mean, he should still beware the Ides though.

Birthday or not, it is the responsible thing to do.

Happy Pi Day!

Was your 3.14 day actually happy for you guys?

Our day was not because we did not eat pie today.  How we managed to let that happen is beyond me and disheartening.

Pie less on pie day is not how we want to greet the Ides of March.

This does not bode well for us.

I at least hope that CLee is wearing his shirt I bought him this day.  Are you, CLEE?! Hmmm?!?!

Zarnyx: The PSVita Edition

In the week and a half since I've had the PSVita, I've outfitted it with wallpaper but not wrist straps or figures.

That's not wowing you, is it?
It's wowed a few people and myself with the giant impressive, beautiful, sharp screen.  I've messaged friends and found a startling 11 people playing nearby my home location (that was scary!) the first night I had it using the built-in feature "Near".

Awesome Sightings on the Outside

We love the Brits and that's not a shocker to any of you lot, right?

What's not to love?

Among other things but just to name a few, there's Doctor Who, The Beatles, Peep Show, Heinz baked beans, the Crown Jewel (Bird's Custard, for you heathens), Harry Hotness, and Stockholm Syndrome.

Oh.  Well the last part is just a sad bit of my nature that you need not worry about.

And then there's BBC America that allows us to enjoy just some of the greatness of British television.

They've got the best sense of humour and for those who deny, such people must not be very humourous.

Honestly, what's not to love about this advert which is so brilliantly marketed?

Currently listening to: "Backmaskwarning" by Mindless Self Indulgence.  Huh.  Coincidental for this post? ....

Valentine's Day at the Hospital and at Kati

It may come as no surprise that Valentine's Day means nothing to The HOchieS, other than our recognizing that it is a horrible, vomit-inducing marketing scheme for a waste of red paper and the gifting of poor quality chocolates.

We don't do much by way of celebrating the day but we do bah humbug it quite a bit.  For instance, I gave H1 a really depressing and disturbing anime box set of Mushi-shi (go watch it for those of you who don't know it! It's uplifting and won't make you cringe or cry.  Honest!).

And she gave me diddly squat.

H-hey...what the Math?!

Newly found bitterness towards H1 aside, we spent our Valentine's Day at the hospital.

Ridiculous Sightings in Retail: Key Jobs and Pancakes

Since 2012, the HOchieS have been putting people out of a job.

We're heartless bastards but can you really blame us or the crazy automatic key maker we found in Lowes?

Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit. Hare, Hare, Hare.

Last month turned out to be one of the worst in some regards.

That said, let's wish good luck to everyone again in the hopes that March will be without incident for all.

Good luck, all.
