Flashback: Family Woes!

The 14th day of February never really meant that much to me. With retailers’ ploys to grab at your hard-earned cash to be spent on lots of wasted paper and cheap chocolates; I never understood why a special day had to be set aside for those shenanigans. But I remember that one year I got something incredibly special as a Valentine’s Day present. Gifted to me by my awesome Father during a time when I was still a student and without the means to buy games for myself. It was presented to me unwrapped, and behind the red paper cut out heart that read “ To My Little One, Happy Valentine’s Day - Love Daddy” was a menacing, half-eaten zombie face. Indeed, my father with his amazing sense of humour had gifted me a bloody Valentine of Resident Evil 2.

The Things That Go Bump in the Night

Imagine if you will, you had been running for days on end through jungles in South America.  You've been chased by henchmen with all varieties of weapons at their disposal but you're not one to sleep on what's in your arsenal either.  A micro-9mm, a Wes-44, an AK-47, the dragon sniper rifle... the list goes on.  Jumping from cliff ledges, trying to avoid gunfire, and picking up treasure along the way - the sense of danger is somewhat exciting, the adventure exhilarating and it is all second nature to you.  There's no worry even as you see your life fading into the grey on those occasions you've encountered just too many gun-toting enemies.  Missing a jump means certain doom but that's not too worrisome either.  There's no fear here at all...that is until the zombies awaken.

Breaking my Moral Code

The Demon Beast lies in wait. At first it's perfectly still in the shadows and then becoming ever so daring, a claw emerges and the sun greets it with burning and a ghastly sizzle. The pain is great but the shame is even more so. Although famished, the beast re-thinks the mad feast it wants to consume. Glistening under the beams, the majestic prey taunts with its pearl white purity. Fancy script and gorgeous designs are daunting morsels that aid in luring the beast in for a closer look...

Obsessions of the Week(s): 2/22/09 - 5/24/2009

Wow, that's just a sad state of affairs there.

My lack of working computer had me not update the obsessions for months, so instead of just posting what I was obsessing over in its proper place, I'm gonna post it right here and then post my current obsessions in the usual spot.

Of course you know, there's no way I wasn't obsessing over stuff for the past 3 or so months.

Moyashimon

Only 11 episodes long, and I'm not done yet. I love this show but I've been staggering my viewing. It's odd, cute, the main character's a sweetie and who would guess that an anime about an agricultural university could be so engaging. I'll miss it when it's done and I'm expecting something tragic because just like you never trust the quiet ones, you never trust seemingly light-hearted anime. Those damned Japanese! I could be wrong though...

Kei and Sawaki

I do enjoy them. And it's true, the buisness of seeing microbes (and they're all smiley, frownie or overly animated beasts) should be even worse but they're just so damned hilarious too. Seriously though, gross...microbes.

Update: I finished it and I loved its rather entertaining oddities and charm; Kei - you're even more awesome than I thought and that's all I will say in case anyone wants to watch this.

Flight of the Conchords

This season is even quirker and more hilarious than the first. The songs have been mostly good and by good, I mean WAY witty and amazing. H1 and I (I even got Bunji hooked) are having lots of fun but are cursing Ticketmaster for their assholery. I'm still going to try to see them in April.

Update: Well I failed to see them and I'm still bitter about it. More reasons to hate Ticketmaster? Sure thing.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The longest name I've seen in a while for an anime, a crazy ride that I'm enjoying and it's a mech anime. Gasp! I very rarely watch those but it was Gainax, so I decided I would watch. It's light, fast and insane, with loveable characters and even loveable mechs! The great thing about Gurren Lagann is that it doesn't take itself "too" seriously and the mech's take on the crazed personalities of the characters x10. The music's great (another hit by Iwasaki Taku) and I love Simon the Digger (heehee, lame name).

Leeron

I may love Simon, Viral (yeah, he's awesome), Kittan, Kamina and just about everyone else in that show (even if I need to curse out Rossiu, that ass), but I don't love them like I love Leeron. He. Is. A. Mess. And once again, having Vash The Stampede's voice always helps.

Update: I finished it. It kept up with the fun but I enjoyed the first half better than the second. Still, I can't wait to see the movie and I'm happy now that I have my very own fully-drillized Gurren Lagann to call my own.

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou

H1 and I are enjoying this season much more than the first. It's scarier, funnier and seems more 'full'. Natsume's adorable, and a deeper look at his relationships, especially with this new family is warming.

Nyanko-Sensei!

Nyanko's even more hilarious this season and H1's loving him. He hasn't really been turning to Madara that much...I think he's really trying to teach that Natsume a lesson or maybe he just wants the Book of Friends faster. heh.

Those were the obsessions for about a month or so, and here are the ones after that up until last week Sunday.

Resident Evil 5

Playing Resident Evil 5 proved one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had. It was welcome quality time spent with Bunji, with lots of zombies, lots of lickers and lots of laughs. It was revealed that I was the better shot, I rocked most of the game using just my little handgun and I refuse to give up my magnum.
Bunji took the lead even though really, the lasers in the temple, Bunji? That was hilarious for me to watch, proving that sometimes it's good for me to not play follower the 'leader'. Bwahahaha.
The game's also not that scary but I understand why it isn't because co-op mode would be boring if it were. Of course, being an RE game, there were moments of panic and terror but all in all, playing late at night with my brother was not as terrifying as it used to be.
Chris Redfield never looked so good before and Sheva was just hot.

Albert Wesker

I posted a blog on this but I still miss this ass.

Nintendo DSi

I bought one after contemplating whether or not I should hold off for a special edition or risk having another Wii incident in which I am assed out. Well, Nintendo made enough of the DSi systems and I'm still waiting for an LE version to get, at which H1 will have an almost brand new DSi for herself. And poor Papa HO will get that a hand me down Red original.

Chrono Trigger DS

Heartache. Always with the effin' heartache.

For some reason it's almost as if I never played this game before even though that's not true, but it felt so much more rewarding this second time around. I was probably still reeling from the fact that Bughie J. made me kill off my favourite Magus when I played many years ago.

This game is by far, one of the best games ever made. That's not surprising to most since it is often heralded as such but it certainly deserves all the praise.

Also, Magus seemed more of an asshole than I remember. He's still my favourite though but did they have to do him dirty by adding that extra 13th ending?

Again with the effin' heartache!

Grand Theft Auto IV: Chinatown Wars DS

Cartman said it best, "I heard someone say they needed to kill a Jew?"
Man replies, "What do you want in return?"
Cartman says, "All I want...is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars DS"

I missed almost all of last season's South Park but as I was playing Chinatown Wars myself one night, I caught that episode and I was in hysterics.

Seriously, Cartman...why DID Chinatown Wars have to come out during the Recession?

Well at least you can get a new copy for $20. Forget lunch!

This game is amazingly fun. I've never played any of the series but I have watched it being played and although fun, the in game world always seemed way to massive for me to handle.
So when the rave reviews started pouring in for the DS game, I was curious and I am beyond glad I took the chance.
Still a massive world, still ultra violent and very much clever, Chinatown Wars ate my soul for a few weeks well.
And then when I had to confront Uncle Kenny...::tear:: Even H1 was sad.

Editor's Note: No clean zombies were actually found in Resident Evil 5.

Missing Wesker

Just shy of 3 or so hours, 1 week ago this moment, Bunji and I finished Resident Evil 5.

I have to say that I miss Wesker terribly.

I know he was an ass, kicked my (and Bunji's...mostly Bunji's) asses, and he had a comical voice actor with the exaggerated "Chrrrriiiss" British type accent put on but it was funny to me and I loved him.

That effer did not want to go down. Even in lava he could not be stopped! It took lava and two rocket launchers to the head to do him in and oops, sorry for the spoiler with no spoiler alert for anyone who might be reading it and wanted to play.

So the bastard's gone but I suspect this isn't the last Chris Redfield (Bunji), Jill Valentine (hideous hair dye job or maybe that was the Progeniture virus?), Sheva (me! I'm a hero lady!), Claire Redfield, or Leon Kennedy (he's so lame) will see of Wesker in some form or other, considering there was talk of "Wesker Children".

I also suspect this isn't the last post about Resident Evil 5 nerditure that I have to post. In fact, I know it isn't because I have at least 2 more related posts coming involving zombies and lickers.

Did I mention I miss that ass Bunji too?

Yeah.

I miss him, as well.

More Zombies, More Debacles

There was a panic attack.

You'd panic too if a chainsaw weilding zombie was chasing you! I couldn't think straight to get my gun out to blast through the heavy duty chained pad lock... instead I tried cutting it with a knife, and the zombie cut off me 'ead with a chainsaw. See? Another year, another incident involving my being knicked in me 'ead. Tch.

There was a Zombie Field Day.

Literally.

Bunji and I must have had a hundreds of them to slay only to be slain multiple times ourselves, while they rode after us on their bikes through the deep Kalahari...uh, Savannah.

There was a boat.

He says I can't drive the boat. He lies. I am still awesome. I don't see me driving us into flambeau throwing zombies!

There were two gators.

Gators? They'll pick you off your raft and eat you. That's why I'm never going to the FL Everglades, or Kikuju in RE5.

There were chickens.

Zombie chickens or regular chickens that will peck you if provoked? Yeah...I'm pretty sure they were just regular chickens and we got what we deserved for trying to cut them for their eggs.

Currently listening to: "Mama Minku" by Tsuyoshi Sekito, from the Brave Fencer Musashiden Original Soundtrack. Well, Well. Minku... man, I love them. That game needs to be released for the psp or ds. I'd be all over it! That and original Ape Escape. Oh hells yes.

"Just Like Old Times"

Bunji has been living with us for some weeks now and we've been bonding.

The first week, we watched various movies together. It's more that he would watch a movie and I'd feel sorry that he was watching by himself, so I'd join him and stay up way too late.

I saw bits and pieces of Die Hard 4, Room 201, and Hero. Oh, sorry H1, JET LI's Hero.

I also got him into Flight of the Conchords and Burn Notice.

It's been fun bonding with him (H1, you bond too so no need for shart!) as it's been some time since we've spent this much time together.

It's also been some time since we've played the gore-filled, scary Zombie fest known as Resident Evil together.

Back in 1997, along with the purchase of our first console (yeah, we had a Commodore 64 and were damned proud and still are) the glorious Sony Playstation, we bought only two games.

Soul Calibur and Final Fantasy VII, were soon followed by the purchase of Tekken and Resident Evil (in 1999 or so?).

There's a special place in my heart for all those games... I got my ass beat as Li Long by Mitsu(bunji)rugi in Soul Calibur. Then I switched to Hwang and kicked a little ass but it wasn't long before Taki the Bunji came along and amped it up and destroyed me some more.

In Tekken, I got Kazuya Poor Me Mishima's ass handed to me by Heihachi Bunji Mishima.

Final Fantasy VII was played by just me, so no memories of Bunji to share there (but oh are there memories to share of Papa HOchie laughing his ass off while I got my ass falling off the top of the runaway train. Thanks for the support Papa Hochie).

And then there was Resident Evil.

The voice acting was nothing short of classic with such lines as "Don't Oh-pEn ThAT doOR!" and the "You are Dead" was amazingly to the point and shamed you.

But the best part about Resident Evil and the RE games to come after it from 1 through 3 (Thanks for buying me the best and only Valentine's gift ever, Papa HOchie. I'll never get rid of my bloody Valentine RE2!) was the time invested in those games, spent with Bunji.

We would always play late at night. All the lights would be off and we would be terrified.

The zombies were slow-moving and particularly funny was that one who lived near the stairs.

And particularly funny was the fact that we jumped in fright at the same dog jumping out of the interrogation room double window, not once but twice. Though now I'm not too clear, was it a dog or a licker? Because those things scared the beejeebus out of us too in RE2! There definitely was a dog jumping out of some window though that also scared us.

A Note on Lickers: I love their ugly selves, especially my Pet Licker!

I would be Bunji's guide. Back in the day when we bought the Brady games Strategy Guides (who buys those things now? If you get stuck, it's called the Internet...not only great for porn), I'd lead Bunji through the dark corridors of the mansion, tell him to run from the zombie crows and whine with fear when he would throw the controller at me to get him back to his last save point after getting destroyed during game play and assholishly telling me to "don't waste my ammo".

You know, as if I could run past a turtle moving zombie without getting killed. It was impossible back then!

And then when he told me to get past Nemesis in RE3... Well, I almost peed my certainly plaid pants I was wearing.

Things have changed these past few days.

But not really.

I bought him Resident Evil 5.

There's a co-op mode.

Why, oh why.

The first two nights he played, everything was as it used to be.

We played late at night, it was quiet and dark and I watched as he tried to familiarize himself with the new control settings of the PS3.

He managed to botch two missions - first getting the shotgun (yeah, we totally missed that rubbish hanging on the wall) and took the hard route blowing up the second boss. Instead of letting him hang on to the canisters while IN the furnace, we used them as firepower and not just as a stunner. Heh, let us just say that was amusing.

We told H1 this story the morning after and she made fun of us, but made even more fun when Bunji said he'd like me to play.

"Don't let her play! She couldn't even see the Elephant in that game she played with Beetchie!" H1 told Bunji.

Shut up, Beetchie.

Because it was funny, here's what happened while Beetchie and I were playing Dynasty Warriors 3:

Beetchie: Elephant, Beetchie!
Or 2: Elephant? What elephant? I don't see any Elepha...::RAMPAGE::

And thus my character went flying off his horse and off the screen as a rather large elephant (some may argue that all elephants are large) plowed through me and I just didn't see it.

Anyway, in spite of the laughing and despite the warning, we gave Co-Op mode in RE5 a go last night.

I failed him just like he already knew.

I think though, that I can get used to this and although I'm still terrified of zombies, especially these that are infected with some virus that gives them a Rage type reaction ie makes them ultra-fast and ultra-difficult to waste, Bunji and I had fun.

Man, I sure miss that T-Virus. Things were simple back then and zombies crawled slowly.

What I don't miss is how damned scary RE1 was. Resident Evil 5 plays more as an action/survival game but is not as scary as the gloomy, darkly lit halls of the mansion in Resident Evil 1.

The noises of RE5 are mostly angry voices in the distance and no longer the sounds of squelching of zombie flesh feasting and the music used to get so much more intense and eerie sounding in RE1. Let us not forget that I can never listen to the "Moonlight Sonata" again thanks to that effin' game.

I'm gearing up for Saturday night's game play.

Currently listening to: "Wake Up Hate" by Korn.
