The Great 2011 Frenemies' Visit, Part II: Seminar

The Tuesday before Thanksgiving it rained and put a damper on our plans.  Ha! Sorry, I could not help myself.

The rain was pretty intense but off Clee and I went to meet up with Pandy, Jilly and Pandy Incarnate of Evilness (True story - PIE is wickedness and we love him plenty!), spend time at Nintendo World, eat at Shake Shack and then to drop some culture on Clee's ass at 7 p.m.

The End of Year Review IV: Broadway, Concerts and the Best of the Blog 2009

This year I saw a couple of favourites again for the millionth time, some might say.  And you guys should shut it!
I also finally saw two of my favourite bands for the first time and what will be the last time for the foreseeable future.

It turned out to be a busy year afterall for shows, but also, we had a sad year overall but we're thankful for lots as usual and hope for an awesome 2010 for all!

7.  U2 at Giants Stadium turned out to be a damned nightmare.  I never wanted to go to this to begin with and only went for MUSE.  It turns out that not even MUSE could correct the awful night we had (but of course they were awesome).  U2 toured on a crap album and they're really showing their age - with forgotten lyrics and timing-off.  Yeesh.  This was definitely the worst show we saw this year and that's surprising.  Oh, it didn't help it that we missed Yeah Yeah Yeahs for this.  Psh.

6. All Points West on Friday.  This was the best free concert surprise! TD5 came up to see AM and just like that, tickets appeared and I got to see YYY and he got to see Vampire Weekend.  Though I suppose nothing is for free because we did have to trek to assland.

5. I never expected I would see Arctic Monkeys twice this year and I don't want to go back to a concert in December.  There's always that risk of the coldest night of the year which is exactly what happened to us.  Then there's always the trauma of having a crappy support band as AM likes to pick them.  And the threat of a not so awesome show.  That should never happen with AM but this isn't the best album either.  It did not help that the show was at the cornerstone either.

4. I may never be that close to Alex, Matthew, The Cookie and Nick again in my life.  It was not the best show I've seen from Arctic Monkeys due to material played but it was quite memorable being in such a tiny space such as The Highline Ballroom with my favourite boys.  And to think, I could have reached out and touched Nick! Too bad that effin' P. Diddy had to ruin things by showing up.  I really did not need to see that.

3. I like Green Day and was upset with myself when I missed the American Idiot/Bullet in a Bible tour. They had a really stupid album this time around but I was not expecting what transpired at MSG. They played for three hours straight and were incredible! I would recommend that everyone see them if given the chance.

2. I never thought the day would come when Jude Law would be on any list of mine.  That man is an ass, let us just get that out there but I suppose you can be an ass and still be a great actor.  Aren't most of them are? We saw him in Hamlet and I am still in awe.

1. Nine Inch Nails.  It took me 15 years to see one of my favourite bands and just as they were on their way out.  I discovered I hate Terminal 5 with a passion and I am really thankful I will never have to experience NINfluenza again.  But I am really sad that I will never get to see them again or that H1 will not get to see them.  That was one of the best shows I have been to.  Oh NIN, come baaaaackkkkkk!!!!

Like I said, this year wasn't the best but surely we had some good memories each month!!!

January saw this HOchie with a not so pg13 lucky lucky bag.  I'm still trying to pass off the sekshi toys on some unsuspecting fool but do you people remember the the hip parade?

Hmmm, what do you suppose we should give up for Lent  this February?

Hey, looks like March wasn't that bad.  We made good memories with Bunji and A'Face even though both were kinda scary moments - all I have to say is, zombies scare the eff out of me but still be pretty funny. And I feel really sorry for Spiderman.

April brought me new shady, pirate friends and made me remember one of the horrors of video game history and just how bad I can be at saving people..

What's that they say about Spring and May Flowers? And NKOTB? Say it ain't so...

Our little MC got married in June and while we got to share in the happiness and greatness that is Trinidad and Tobago, we sadly did not get to see our little Pandy get married.

H1 likes to torture me and also make fun of my 'lack' of skills.  She has no idea how that keeps me up at night... But I suppose it was only payback for what I did to her.  Though she seems to be have had lots of debacles of her own.

August is always an ass month but we were quite busy! With NIN, Arctic Monkeys and All Points West, we had quite the few weeks and then of course, August always proves what it is and hits me with sickness like never before.  Ack, damned NINfluenza.

September saw us having crap with U2 but at least we made it up by having fun memories with our friends in the kids room.

October was surprisingly quiet but it wouldn't be October without a Zombie panic attack.

We had fun times in November with Thanksgiving week including attending Hamlet.

And here we have December - there are still days left for memories but so far, it's been a crazy not-so-great month but we're looking forward to Christmas and some time off with each other.

Ophelia is Just Terrible.

Initially, I was supposed to go but then I gave up my ticket to H1.  Turns out I had to go anyway because poor Aims and poor Aims' dad had a rough week, and I ended up getting use out of her ticket.

All this confusion to say this:

Who knew Jude Law could act?

Hahahaha.

I'm just kidding; though I can say that I have never been a huge fan of his.

However, seeing his performance in Hamlet warranted respect.

The execution was everything on his part - his spoken lines to his mannerisms made him pure brilliance.

Even though I made a 'vow' not to give him a standing ovation, he truly deserved one and I had to oblige.

The rest of the cast were quite good as well, with honourable mention to the role of Polonius.  Poor, poor Polonius...

Well, most of the cast were quite good save the forgettable roles for Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, which is sad.

And Ophelia...

Oh, Ophelia.

How horrible and unbelievable her role was acted out?

Quite.

Our seats were wonderful, though the Broadhurst theatre is not a favourite location of ours, and the service was even worse but no real complaints.

Jude was 'speaking' to us - as in we were very much centre and could see him clearly and he us from where we sat.

The stage setting was great, and the sword fight at the end was actually quite good and not poorly choreographed at all.

Honestly, I did not think I'd be as amazed as I was for this production.

It was brill. Brill.  Brill! and I am quite pleased I got to see it afterall.

With a city to take in and bellies to fill with food, we walked over to Katsuhama for some ...katsu.  Heh.

My first meal in Japan was tonkatsu and since then, I've tried to have it wherever I go to try to re-live the good times.  Being that I will probably never eat another piece of sushi that melts to pure bliss outside of Japan, I was almost of that mindset when it came to the tonkatsu as well.

Katsuhama has managed to be on even footing with that memory but chances are, if you use berkshire pig in a meal, it'll be amazing.

Happy with our meals, we made our way to the train with lots of time to spare and I managed to scratch two things off of my list in one evening! I finally went to Cafe Zaiya.

It was not as I expected honestly, and with close to closing, I suppose I could not expect everything I wanted to put into my mouth to be there (onigiri would have been a pleasant though I suspect I will not eat as great a one as I did whilst in Tokyo, either) but I HAD to have the "home-made" green tea soft serve ice-cream hoping to re-live the one Beetchie and I had in Kyoto.

Wow.

It came really close to be as fantastic as I trick myself into believing.  In all seriousness, it was really good and I would go back there just to have another.

It was a great day and I'm a happy kid right now, who should get some sleep.  It's been a long sort of few days past and I need to rest, and not run myself down as I usually do, opening myself up to sickness.

Memorable Quotes of the evening:

"Question it, Horatio!" - Marcellus

TD5: Ophelia was just terrible, wasn't she?
Or 2: Yeah.  She was acting as if she were in a high school play.
TD5: And there you go.

WTF Moment of the Evening:

The people behind us who commented, "He (Jude) looks like Ryan Seacrest".

Some people deserve to be scratched with a poison-tipped sword.

39 Steps with TD5

It sounds like a very complicated program for addiction, doesn't it?

Well, it's really a network of spies...

and BANG!

That aside, here's a story of what happened before Mr. Memory lost his memory and everything else.

TD5 and I trundled to Midtown and trundled some more through the Grand Central Holiday Fair then around 42ND Street to visit Toys R' Us and the Virgin Mega store.

There were some nice things at the GCS Holiday Fair but not being of upper middle to upper class status as TD5 and I noted, those nice things were left exactly where they were, waiting for pretentious fools to go ahead and spend their money on often hippy, overpriced, classist nonsense.

He got his nephew some sort after Transformer toys that involved Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee. I was pushing him to get Galvitron since I'm a Decepticon fan myself (yeah, who would have thought?) but at least Megatron and Scorpion (?) came in the sets too. There's always room for Decepticons.

Virgin Megastore proved pricey as usual but I did walk out with something great and free: The Onion. That's always fun times. That and a free Iron Man poster.

We then met up with H1, Luiiiissss and Alex to do dinner. Thank goodness I checked the tickets and discovered the show was at 7PM and not 8PM because there would have been some hella angry peeps had we missed half the thing. Heh.

Our plans to go to Delta Grill were squashed with this new information so we went to the closest, quick service, good food place we could think of and ended up at Pongsri.

After dinner and bidding farewell to Alex, we went to see the Broadway play - Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, which was not an actual addiction program but I'm sure you lot already figured that out.

The first half was rather entertaining and any mention of 'coos makes for a good bit of media. H1 and I were quite pleased.

The second half started off kind of slow but it was alright. The jokes were plentiful and funny, sometimes expected and 'ran' the same way but all in all, it was a very pleasant evening with family.

TD5 enjoyed his early Birthday present and that's awesome.

All in all, I'd say our evening took about 3900 steps, which I guess means we need lots of help.

Highlights of the evening:

1. The (first - ha) shadow puppet theatre during the chase scene.
2. The cast. I enjoyed 3 of the 4 members. I was not very moved by the lead female but she wasn't bad either.
3. The costume changes and multiple role changes within scene and the non-seriousness of it all.
4. The top of the train scene as pictured here courtesy of the official website www.39stepsonbroadway.com:

Memorable Quote:

Professor Jordan: It was supposed to be a cast of four! ::dying:: four...

Currently listening to: "Mid Point" by Kuniaki Haishima, from the Monster Original Soundtrack 1. Heh, I've TD5 hooked on Monster! Bwahahaha. I'm so proud of myself.

What's Up With Stuff?

This was the fortune HOchie 1 received today from a cookie (or at least it was some bullsheet a-like-so):

Turn the two corners of your mouth from down to upwards into a smile.

What is that? I think the Chinese are running out of fortunes to tell. That wasn't even a fortune!

It's kind of like Broadway. They're running out of stuff to make into musicals. Seriously, "Mary Poppins"? Mary frickin' Poppins.

I also think I'm running out of ideas for blog titles.

2006 - Fun Times With The HOchies List

The trickery I do so love to lay down on you guys! This isn't exactly the Fun Times with the HOchies 2006 list. I already did a photo post of that to you guys. No, this is really the Or 2's Best of 2006 Music, Concert and Broadway List.

Joke's on me because some of you are going to skip over this, yeah? Asshats. That's right, HOchie 1! I called you an asshat!

Anyway, of the albums I got this year and mind you, some of them weren't released this year but they were new to me, here they are and the songs that were best from them:

Death Cab for Cutie

We Got the facts and We're Voting Yes - so far disappointing and I can't even pick a song from here yet but I will listen again in the near future

Something About Airplanes - "Bend to Squares" is a fantastic song. Other than that, this album is another I'll need to listen to because so far it's boring as heck. Sorry TD5.

Transatlanticism - "Tiny Vessels", "Title and Registration"

Audioslave

Revelations - "Shape of Things To Come", "Moth", Wide Awake

With no tour planned for the year after the album came out, I don't know what's going with Audioslave. They had one of the worst songs this year, "Original Fire". I cringe everytime I hear it. This album, other than those three songs, is mostly forgettable and that is painful for me to say. Sweet D., you can keep him even though I still love you, T.M.

The Streets

The Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living - "Can't Con an Honest John", "The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living", "When You Wasn't Famous". This is another not-so-great album after the golden greatness of Mike Skinner's first two.

Tool

10,000 Days - "The Pot", "Vicarious". "The Pot" is one of the greatest songs this year but Tool, why are you making me add you to the list of not-so-great overall?! Maybe if you stopped your bullshit pretentiousness, then you'd make an album that wasn't one long boring song and an extension from your last! Geez.

OK Go

OK Go - "Get Over It" (Hilarious video and amazing song), "Hello My Treacherous Friends" (I like the bit about the spider children. I don't understand it but I like it as long as they're not Hobo Spiders, that is. Right X?), "1000 Miles Per Hour"

Oh No - "Oh Lately It's So Quiet", "It's a Disaster", "Maybe This Time". I took a chance on this band this year starting with this album and loved it so much that I forced them upon SF (but you know you should be thanking me, right, SF?), made enemies with Hinder and went out and bought OK Go's first. This is a really fun album and they seem to be a fun bunch of guys who are really about their fans and that's always a plus.

Thom Yorke

The Eraser - "Analyse" (One of the best songs this year!), "The Clock", "Harrowdown Hill". Thom Yorke, that loveable freak. I liked this album well enough. Oh and "The Drunk Machine" from the Harrowdown Hill EP is pretty good too.

Arctic Monkeys

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - "Dancing Shoes", "Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But...", "Mardy Bum", "You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me".

Okay, so I stayed away from this band realizing how hyped up they were as soon as they came out until of course, a 7 hour flight to London and a broken pair of Ipod headphones forced me to make use of Virgin Atlantic's In-Flight Entertainment Service. So, I listened and actually liked it. It's not to be taken seriously, the whole thing's about how to hook up on the dancefloor (yeah, let's say the Arctic Monkeys can write only as well as, well, Arctic Monkeys. But ah, the lyrics and music are fun so whatever) and wow, do they like long titles.

Mindless Self Indulgence

Another Mindless Rip Off - (it truly is but at $8.99 and my undying love for this band, I had to get it. They know we're idiot fans who will buy anything but we know it too so it doesn't make it better but it makes it something) "Born to be Beheaded", "Frying Pan", "What Do They Know?" remix by MSI VS. Julien-K. & Chester Bennington

Shut Me Up: The Remixes + 3

This was truly disappointing! I mean, I rushed out to buy it for MSI's cover of "Big Poppa" because if you've heard their covers of "Tom Sawyer" and "Bring The Pain", you'll agree with me that MSI can cover a song like nobody's business but ugh, I was so sad and unimpressed by "Big Poppa". It wasn't horrible but it wasn't A+ material either. It was rather boring.

Despierto Los Ninos - "Alienating my Audience", "Joke", "Wack". And these songs are examples of why I love them because they're self-loathing, fan-hating, fun time bitches.

The Legend of Zelda

From The Oracle of Ages Sdtk - "Tower of Black", "Ralph's Theme" and no, Ralph is NOT my BFF!!!!!!!

From "The Oracle of Seasons" Sdtk - "Castle of Despair"

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children

"Battle in the Forgotten City", "Beyond the Wasteland", "Sairin: Kata Tsubata No Tenshi". Yes, "One-Winged Angel" remains bad-assed even after given a rock on opera makeover.

And now for the two greatest albums all year...

Keane

Under the Iron Sea - "Nothing in My Way", "Leaving So Soon?", "A Bad Dream". Thanks to some drugs, Keane released a stellar album this year. The entire thing is amazing save maybe one song I refuse to listen to. They would have made number one on my list and heck knows they're really close to being at that spot but of course...

MUSE

Black Holes & Revelations - "Map of the Problematique", "Hoodoo", "Take A Bow". I'd be a traitor if I didn't have them as the most revered. But in all honesty, had they not made an incredible album, Keane would have taken this one. Every track is great except for that damned "Knights of Cydonia" that I hate but absolutely love in concert. And "Invincible" which grew on me because it's also great in concert.

[Personal Message: Matt, I love you. Please send me tickets and VIP passes to your show at Wembley Stadium on June 16th of next year. No one got tickets for me even though I pleaded that that was the only present I wanted for Christmas. Bitches.]

But talk about another hideous album cover...

For those of you who missed receiving a copy of this c.d. from me or TD5 this year, no worries...as soon as their concert dvd comes out, you're all getting one.

Now for my list of the shows (concerts & broadway) I saw this year starting with the best and ending with the worst:

1. MUSE at Wembley Arena. "Assassin (Grand Omega Bosses Mix)" is the most bad-assed performance in concert I've ever seen and/or heard.

2. Mindless Self Indulgence (tied with below) - oh how I love Jimmy. Within two years, baby, I'll have Urine tattoed to my foot. This was my first real pit. I'm alive. Barely. If not for Beetchie and Jess, I wouldn't be posting right now.

2. Evil Dead The Musical (tied with above) - great because X got roughed up.

4. Spamalot - I like Lancelot; he likes to dancealot. And he was pretty hot.

5. MUSE @ The Hammerstein Ballroom - small venue greatness because I was close to my man and fun because now SF is hooked.

6. Franz Ferdinand @ The Hammerstein Ballroom - as my Budgie would say, "if it's free, it's for me" and then there was the Alex moment.

7. Wicked - There's nothing like a gOOd-lOOkin' flying monkey. Yes, it is possible.

8. Les Miserables - the slo'mo' death scene was hilarious even though I don't think they meant it to be. The flush was just damned lame.

9. (and now for the worst show, please view two blogs before this one) Matisyahu. That's right, MC. Matisdamnedyahu.

And this next bit is for my own purposes -

My Top 25 Most Played Ipod Playlist

At the end of 2006, here's what it looks like:

1. What Do They Know? @ 314 times played
2. Stupid MF
3. Microphone Commander
4. Map of the Problematique
5. Time is Running Out
6. Eternally Missed
7. Hysteria
8. Shut Me Up

10. New Born
11. You'll Rebel To Anything (As Long As It's Not Challenging)
12. Talk To Me, Dance With Me
13. Bomb This Track

Wicked

Been there, done that.

You other guys get to go next year so I won't say anything about it yet.

Yes, continue to hate me until that time you see it.

But here's the one thing everyone else said though:

Who knew Ana Gasteyer could sing?

DRV Ruins Broadway Shows...

Never mind that I have only seen and heard her in one Broadway show but I cannot believe that the cur that is Daphne Rubin-Vega could be good in any show. That woman almost got a bottle in her head from me because I could not believe that after waiting more than a decade to see Les Miserables and to hear "I dreamed a Dream" and "Come To Me" that the moment came down to a raspy, flat belting out and a bastardization of the two greatest Broadway songs eva'.

WHAT DE ASS?!

I so did not pay 118USD to hear such crap.

The only reason that I did not write this off as a total loss is because DRV/Fantine died quickly and that Jean Valjean and Javert were just terrific. DRV sucks. A disgrace to Panama and to all other people on Broadway who can actually sing. Eponine and Little Cosette included. Imagine, even Little Cosette outsang you and moved me to almost crying with her "Castle in the Clouds". I just wanted you to die.

I getting vex again. This post is DONE.

TD5, I don't want to hear about how she was not that bad and don't forget, if I get any DRV stuff, it is getting sent back to you ... in pieces! - H1, angried up.

Quote of the day:

H1: I am woman.
Giant Kitty: Hear me roar. I mean, hear you roar.

We Eat Ham and Jam and Spamalot

After over a year of trying to fanagle tickets (and actually considering buying them at 300 bucks) to one of the hottest shows on Broadway, the HOchieS and friends finally made it to "Spamalot" on 86 dollar tickets. Our seats were not bad at all and certainly not that crap partial viewing that was trying to be sold to us for months.
We missed the cast that included Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce and Hank Azaria and while that's a little sad, I was quite happy with the cast we saw. The show was hilarious as expected from a Monty Python production. The songs may not be as memorable as say "Avenue Q" (which we saw two years ago and to this day we still sing "The Internet is for Porn" and state on occasion "Grab your dick and double-click; Porn Porn Porn"), but classic MP memories will live on from this show. There's not much to say about the show because although I could toss quotes back and forth, you just have to be there to understand.
After the show, Beetchie being an autograph opportunist ran off to get her playbill signed. Of course, in true dorkdom fashion, I followed and Sons came with us. We managed to get the autographs of Sir Not Appearing (Kevin Covert), Sir Lancelot (Steve Kazee), Prince Herbert (Christian Borle - who incidentally was trying his best to sneak away after the show but we accosted him nicely), some unrecognizable signature I have here nor do I remember who it was... and King Arthur (Harry Groener).
One word for Lancelot - hot. And I've got a picture to justify my decree. As for myself in that picture, two words - not hot. Ah well. Apparently no one should take pictures of me whilst I'm speaking but whatever, we should all be gazing upon Lancelot anyway.
My only regret is that we did not get the autograph of THE Eric Idle.

Of course, the best performance of the evening came from my favourite character:

I love you!!!!!

Quote of the evening:

"Forget the Prince. Look de King! Get the King! The KING!!" - Tones.
All Hail the King.

Quote of July 27th:
"The potentials are horrendous." - HOchie 1, on the outcome of a ginger and black union.
