If There's One Thing They Can Do...

The number of times I've seen Muse live now has alarmingly breached my second hand when finger counting.

I'm not apologizing for seeing them 7 times (6 times Muse proper and once as support for U2) though.  Hell, if I had the money and will to do so, I probably would have gone again tonight.

Because last night reminded me of why they're just so damned fantastic.

Before you all get all rolly-eyed with me, know this: I had no intention of seeing them this tour.

It's a blasted, horrible current album.  They've gone off the deep end on this one.  I bestowed upon them the dishonour of being my most hated album last year, as they bestowed upon me the dishonour of having to listen to that mess.

But, if there's one thing they can do...it's put on a show.

Now, I've fond memories from nearly all my Muse shows.  The first was at a tiny venue and they'll never be that small again.  The second was in London - different vibe being on home turf and an awesome time.  The third was...in London at Wembley Stadium with H1 - two sisters having a blast in a huge opening for the Stadium.  The fourth was in the pit at MSG and so close to the action that it was plain amazeballs.  The fifth was god awful at MSG and I don't know what happened there.  The sixth was for U2 and they turned out better than U2 (U2 at the time were touring that rubbish last album).  And last night...Last night was special for the sort of sad reasons you never want to think about.

I was uneasy.  It was not a show I planned on going to but an Active Goat was never afforded the opportunity.  I took her because she and I have become quite the friends and if there's one show anyone ever needs to see, it's Muse.  Goats are all about being dragged to things and actively going there of their own mind even if they don't know they've been tricked.  Haha! Nothing, Goat.  You saw nothing.

I was doubly uneasy.  All manners of bullshit happened in Boston yesterday as terrorists attacked the city during their Marathon.  Hundreds are severely injured.  Lives were lost.

It's a sad time and certainly puts a damper on your spirit.  And a concert at MSG is the furthest thing from my mind knowing shit is going on number one and number two, that you're at a prime target for a terrorist attack to happen.  Security was of course heightened but that did not make me feel better.

I pondered long on getting these tickets and therefore ended up with not prime seating.  Section 106 though I have to say was not bad at all.  Maybe not Row 20 at Seats 1 and 2 but not bad viewing for Muse's theatrics at all.

Always one to do things loud and bombastic, nothing was left to be dull.

The famous inverted pyramid for this tour came down from the ceiling and the first image was one that hit a little too close to home.

A lone marathon female runner - fighting to run.  Stopping to catch her breath.  It was uncanny.  I don't believe it was intentional but it was something.  It was something jarring with Boston fresh on my mind.

Images plastered everywhere on the multi-screen pyramid set to heavy electronic music of The 2nd Law.  Muse eventually came out and dove straight into "Supremacy".

Never one to shy away from Conspiracy Theories and how we should all band together in an Uprising to take down the wealthy government and general spewing of "rock n' roll" rhetoric, it was an odd universe and feeling to be stuck in in that moment during the events that had occurred mere hours previously.

As the highly energetic night wore on with all my old favourites being played, at one point Matt belted out the Star-Spangled Banner on the guitar to a sort of hushed audience mixed in with almost forlorn cheers.  It was heart-breaking.  It was heavy.  It felt right.  I think everyone at the arena stood proud.  I know I did.


The Low Lamps

1.  It's NYC, so Muse thought maybe they could put Chris on to sing one of his songs.  Sorry Chris.  Those songs were horrible.  The was actually not well received at all by the crowd.  I clapped a little because I love them all, but...no.  Those songs were part of the problem of the new album.

2.  A couple eventually ended up sitting next to us at the concert.  We were hoping for some European hotties, Goat and I but alas...

3.  Every time Muse played one of the crappier songs from the current album that I did not care for (which was 80% of the album), I cringed.

4.  Matt jumped into the crowd at the pit! What the eff! He couldn't do that in 2007 when I saw him and was in the pit?! Curse you, effin' Bells.  CURSE YOU.

5.  Absolutely nothing was played from Origin of Symmetry.  Son of a...

The Highlights

1.  You know, I've avoided Biffy Clyro for some while and I'm not sure why I did.  They're not so bad.  I mean, they're a lot more alternative than I imagined them to be but they did have a sort of heavy metal vibe going to them too which is more of what I expected of them.  Good stuff.  Mostly good stuff.  Some of it was dull nearing the end there.


2.  The stage set up.  Truly magnificent! Muse are never meant to be stripped down.  This is how they should be seen.  It was quite the amazing set up this time around.  It all sounded loud, clear, and good.  Mostly.  Sometimes it sounded not so great but damned amazing to experience.

3.  Great songs outweighed the bad ones played.  And the ones I did like off the album were done really well.

4.  Muse.  Even after distancing myself from them for the past two years or so, they still manage to impress.  Dom was so cute at the end there too saying goodbye to NY.  Love that boy a lot.

5.  Section 106 was full on French people.  Whoooaaaa!!!!

6.  An Active Goat.  "Um, Goat.  I think we're on the floor we need to be on already."  "Nah! We didn't go up three flights yet!"  "Um, yeah.  I think we did.  Yep, pretty sure this is us...::watching her go up the escalator." "Uh oh!"  Two seconds later she re-appeared from the service exit staircase.  So freaking hilarious, I can't even tell you.

It was during the encore, the boys came back met by a sea of lit phones all around the Garden like twinkling stars, and they in turn dedicated "Starlight" to the people of Boston.  "They need all our support tonight!" or something along those lines were said.  It was an amazingly, fitting moment.

And more so when everything ended in "Survival".

Words cannot even express the pure excitement and solidarity in those final moments as we all clapped our hands together in unison.  For Boston.  For each other.  For everyone.

It's Happened

There are no high hopes for Muse's new album after hearing that rubbish new single "Madness".  If I could describe a pop song in the most disgusting of ways, I would do so for this.

However, there are currently no words to describe the horror.

Unfreakin' Believable

Say what you will about the official song for the Olympics 2012 but as the OFFICIAL song, you'd think NBC wouldn't cut it out of their closing ceremony "broadcast", right?

It should come as no surprise to me the level of assness NBC has displayed during these entire games and yet they still managed to piss me off this day in one final hurrah.

I might be on a bit of a breakup from Bells but that is besides the point and what NBC did was really, really idiotic.

Really.

Yet I had to sit there and listen to that asshole Ryan Seacrest talk out of his asshole showcasing his lack of musical knowledge, watch Posh Spice almost fall off her car (which would have been fabulous except she didn't), Kate Moss heroin walk in a daze, Jessie J. butcher Freddie Mercury and waste two and a half hours of my life watching commercials and terrible performances when I could easily have wasted that time playing Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance instead.

Absolute brilliance, that.

Edit at 12:39 a.m.: I'm sure they cut tons of material and I'm seeing Kate Bush got cut too.  Complete shitnanigans.

I don't want to say awful but it really kind of is...kind of awful.

Alright.

Here's what I think, truly.  It's everything from the last two albums I did not fancy mixed into one track (think Knights of Cydonia (which I really dislike no matter what any of you louts say; that song is mostly lame) plus United States of Eurasia (which as the name implies was full of rot)) but will sound amazing in concert (no surprise) and somehow manages to be ever so slighty less agitating.  As an Olympic Theme, I can give it a pass in its ridiculousness.

What else can I say about it? I can say it's actually typical later Muse and not the dreadful influenced drivel I was expecting since the Unmentionable happened.  I'm still expecting some of that on the new album but it's not present here.  A glimmer of hope, perhaps?

And the end of this song?

It is in no way awesome.  It's in no way a "Whhaauuhhhtt" in your face sort of awesome.

It's more of a "Whhhaaaaatttt" disbelief reaction in its terribleness.

Yep, it totally smells like dog buns.

A Night Out with The HOchieS, Part II: It Said MSG but We Ended Up in Canada?

It's very rare I find myself down in the 30s, which may explain why I have not had an amazing Korean food experience yet in K-Town.

Chances are if you find me in the K'Hood, it's due to the fact that I'm off dragging a poor soul to Madison Square Garden.

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door

So it's been a long time since this game came out. Eventually I get to them if I can find copies! H1 and I have alawys wanted to play this series and I'm happy that I picked it up. It's cute, pretty hilarious and Luigi, even though he's not in the main game really, he's there and getting some major props. "Moustache...hat...! I know you! You're the hero!!! Luigi!" That's right, bitches. Best line in the game so far (especially since it was said to Mario).

Watching Bakemonogatari made me want to draw again. I've had the feeling for a while now, actually but the style was so indie and an oddity in itself like the oddities the anime featured, that I had to do some sketching. His head might be big, but damn that Raphael is becoming one cool, scary creation

M@WS 2010

Mini-Concert

In all the years that H1 and I have been working at Rockefeller Plaza, as we have said before on this blog, we have had to endure rubbish mini-concerts as we walk past Rock. Centre on mornings.

Every summer, with assaulted ears, we shove through the throngs of old people, of tweens, of thugs, and emos (a tween is an emo though, so I suppose I am being redundant), depending on who is playing.

This year alone we have had to woefully experience Hannah Montana, NKOTB, Fergie, Kings of Leon Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Bon Jovi (twice, in two weeks - he was there this morning after being there for Veterans Day).

Last year for the first time, we had a bit of a pleasant shock when R.E.M. performed.  It was the pinnacle moment of glory in our six plus years of working in the area.

There's a saying H1 and I utter every time we go by and say to the screaming clusters..."unless it's Arctic Monkeys or MUSE, MOVE ALONG!"

That day has yet to come but we're one step closer to greatness...

MUSE will be performing on December 19th, 2009 at Rockefeller Center for their performance on SNL!!!!!!

Beetchie and X, will you two come with? Please?

Edit on 12/18/2009: And just like that, we're now two steps closer to greatness.  The performance is indoors, so no standing in the cold for me tomorrow.  Ah well.  At least our future is not as bleak as it once was.

A Day Full of Awesome Announcements

Will I be going to see M@WS again? Oh hells yeah! That's the plan as of now anyway.

Also, March 9th, 2010... After almost 3 years, I'll finally get to use the PS3 for the reason I bought it...to play Final Fantasy XIII.

U2: Rockin' the Bad Juju, Part II

After everything, one could only hope that the concert would be at least greatness. Well, it never could be without Sons there but why were there other issues as well?

She's the only reason we were going to see U2 this tour because as we have expressed before, "No Line on the Horizon" is the worst album all year.

Sons eventually did make it, in time to hear 7 songs (and at least they played "Sunday Bloody Sunday" for her) but not before getting into a cab and being told by those idiots at LaGuardia that they had no idea how to get to Giants Stadium.

First, the highlights:

1. The partial truth is that we stuck out getting a refund for the concert tix because of Sons. I truly wanted to go in the first place because MUSE were supporting U2. So, the number 1 highlight OF COURSE, are my boys.





They killed it!





2. The new songs sounded amazing as expected and apparently Matt has a new song for me that he plays during concert.

The Black Holes and Revelations song for Suga'Face was "Map of the Problematique".

The Resistance song for Suga'Face is "Undisclosed Desires".

I'm not sure if I should be flattered or highly embarrassed.



3. Dom was very cute, with his new haircut and all. And he really tore it up this time around. He was all smiles and loving every minute of it.



4. H1 even managed to clap correctly through "Starlight"!

I cannot wait to see them for their US Tour which happens next year and TD5 is coming!

5. U2's Claw. I was not really feeling that claw for months and most of the night until it lit up during a certain song (forgotten which one) and then like a disco ball during "Ultraviolet". I may not like that song but when Bono was swinging from the microphone/wii wheel and the light just went all 'round the stadium, that was some impressive shart right there.







6. Their remix of "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" was funny. The vids that went with just made it ever more ridiculous. Loved it!

7. That one sista' who was there LOVING every minute of U2. Kudos to her, man.

8. U2's intro being Bowie's "Space Oddity". Bowie's the best and probably the only really great thing U2 pulled that night. Har har.

9. Oh yeah, knowing MUSE's set list was all the more fantastic on our night than on the 24th? Good times, that.

The Lowlamps:

1. WTF, MUSE! No "Unnatural Selection"?! Guess I'll have to wait until your own US Tour to hear it. If I see that you play it on any of these dates, I will be verrrry unhappy...especially if TD5 gets it! Psh.

2. The crowd energy at MUSE. I mean, the crowd period. What crowd? No one really turned up and only a handful of us were going nuts up in there. ::sigh:: Ah well. At least when they roll back the footage from Giants Stadium, they'll see me going crazy.

3. Kids. Those kids in front of us. What the hell were they doing there for U2. How dull they were - they didn't dance, they barely moved. Sticks, that's what they were. Sticks. Not that I think they could have danced not being blessed with dancing genes and all but honestly? A little emotion for your parents-bought $98.00 tickets would have been appreciated.

4. U2's set list. This should be number one, truthfully. U2's set list was god awful. We were originally supposed to be night 2 and would have gotten the better set list that was instantly made cooler by the inclusion of "Until the End of the World" and "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" but alas, as discussed before we were just assed out of everything.

5. MUSE's sad barely-45 minutes-appeal-to-US-mainstream-bastards set list. It's not their fault...they had to play what they released but it was a downer.

6. Turns out I didn't get to even see MUSE/the boys' assbacks but more the back of their heads. Blessed or unlucky? Not really sure...

7. Okay U2. How old are you guys now? Bono sounded...odd. And sometimes, which was noticeable to me, they were not in sync with each other. Was I the only one picking up on that? It really threw me off.

8. H1's scream for Larry when he first came on stage. We made a pact that we were so disgruntled by their shenanigans that we would not support the band much in protest. As soon as Larry walked on to the stage though, H1 started screaming. She looked at me and said, "I'm sorry...I just kind of forgot myself. Sorry."

Hm. I was unimpressed by you, H1.

9. No good pics. Again. Really need to invest in a better camera for shows...

10. Gyrating girls. Oh. My. Eyes. H1 may have very well vomited right then and there but I caught a glimpse and she would not have been in the wrong. It was quite the worst thing I've seen in a long time. S-c-a-r-y. Thank goodness I didn't get a picture. That would have burnt a hole in the blog.

11. Being in NJ for the 2nd time that week. Yeesh.

12. Having to give up Yeah Yeah Yeahs tickets to attend this hellified trash of an evening (MUSE never are but you know... we just had a rotten time overall). ::sniff:: These used to be The HOchieS' tickets:

Nightmares Return!

I listened to the "Exogensis Symphony Parts I - III".

It's very "OoS" in nature and amazing. It's not as 'HUGE' as I thought it would be but it's very, very good.

Except...

Part III's beginning has a familiar sound, much like that piece of music I can't listen to anymore for fear of zombies.

"Unnatural Selection" - great. Love it lots!!!!!!

"MK Ultra" - Better than okay but not greater than that on first listen.

"The Resistance" - This albums KoC. I hate that song. I might be inclined to say I hate this one too. Or maybe just the beginning and the chorus. The verses are fantastic. Chorus...ignore, ignore, ignore the line about "love".

"Guiding Light" - Can't get any more 80's-put-up-your-lighters than this. Fail! Oh, H1. This is number 5 too. Epic Fail.

"I Belong to You (+Mon Coeur S'Ouvre A Ta Voix)" - hilarious and kind of a wtf moment. Then followed by more hilarious. Ahahahahaha. They plugged their own band name in there. That's classic right there. Followed by...French? Actual French? And not cool like "Psycho Killer"? Meh, in Matt's defense, no French will ever be as cool as "Psycho Killer" but way to butcher the language there, Bells. Way to butcher. Matt? Stop going to the opera.

"USoE" - Queen all the way and they know it. I like it because they made it a joke. But will my face be red at the concert when they play it? Yes. Embarrassment awaits.

"Undisclosed Desires" - Guilty pleasure song of the year. It's so bad! Muse does R&B. That alone is greatness but they have no business doing things they have no clue about. Awww, I like this stupid ass song. And stupid ass it is. With a touch of Depeche Mode.

"Uprising" - has really grown on me. I'll sing it proudly next Wednesday and salute bears and all.

"Exogenesis" - ...I have to really listen to the three part symphony that my boy composed on his own. I'm not ready to take in a symphony, so I'll rant about it when I do. I'm expecting pure greatness though. Um, minus...the slap bass I keep reading about?

Well...

This will be an ongoing thing until 9/14 but I have only a few days left to hopefully eat my words but I heard two more tracks from MUSE's new album and this is not sounding good for me.

Remind Me

Tomorrow, when I'm sobbing that I was not awake at 3 AM buying tickets for what will truly be the most legendary concert in MUSE's career with my very own unique pass code for a very limited pre-sale opportunity, that the logistics and cost of being at Teignmouth, Devon in the U.K. would prove too difficult an endeavour for me to undertake.

Please do not remind me that the concert is happening on the weekend of Labour Day, I wouldn't be missing any work that I couldn't make up one Saturday before the end of September, the round trip ticket could be only about 300 something dollars, a train ride from London would make me feel like I'm on a proper holiday complete with Famous Five moors and screws of salt for my boiled eggs and cucumber sandwiches, Devon is near the seaside and is the home to Devonshire Tea which is the home to the greatest thing on earth and that's clotted cream and scones for those of you who do not know (I didn't until I wiki'd) and that seeing my favourite band at a homecoming gig would be priceless.

"I hate pros and cons!", she said in her very best Grouchy Smurf impersonation.

Assed

It's not necessarily "Assed Out" in a sense but certainly, when The HOchieS & Co. (see how I made use of "& Co.", H1? You should be proud!) see U2 later this year, this is how it's going to be -

Being that U2 claims this is the 360 Tour, so that no matter where you sit in the stadium you won't be "Assed Out", I'm not too worried about our seating area for them.

But being that I don't really care too much since U2's new album sucks an ass, I'll consider myself "Assed Out" anyway.

When it comes time to see MUSE however, well...let's just say we'll be Assed.

Treasure Hunt

Every tour, and in some cities, MUSE would hold a bit of a treasure hunt for their fans.
The conspiracy theorists and crazies, much like Matt, would decipher encrypted messages from the band and go running around town for random bits of things left behind.
I believe there was a bicycle one year.

With the new album almost upon us, MUSE have completely revamped their website and have unlocked a microsite called The Ununited States of Eurasia, and with it a Global Treasure Hunt.

USB keys were hidden in various countries and so far, I think all have been found over the course of this past week.

The codes on the USB keys, discovered by 'agents' (which is what MUSE are calling us) unlock fragments of one of their new songs, "The United States of Eurasia".

So far, I've listened to the bits unlocked and it's very Queen, "We are the Champions" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" like.

With bad vocals.

I will continue to comfort myself by the fact that it will be quite the grandiose stadium anthem of their tour or would that be the three part epic piece "Exogenesis: Symphony", that I am also nervous to hear especially since Dom and Chris had reservations doing it and Matt composed (I'm talking symphony here...he. composed. a symphony) himself?

In other MUSE news, they're playing the VMAs this year. I am shocked and excited!

Too excited, perhaps.

I went ahead and dreamt that I had tickets to the VMAs just to suffer through all the other bullshit to see them and as soon as Matt spotted me in the crowd he yelled something close to, "you made it!" and proceeded to pull me from where I stood to go hang out.

Ah yes, and thus begins 2009 - 2010's crazy obsession with MUSE on my part.
