Like a Record, Baby

North.  South.  East.  Or was it West?  Where did that mutt go? What was it the Jack-in-the-Box said about the Rocking Horse? Where's that happy music being played? Was I supposed to take the path on the left through the trees or the right near the recovery spring?

Back at the entrance, I resolve to be more careful to save his tiny, furry butt this time.  I might actually read and focus on the instructions given when that colourful, swaying accordion fool gives it to me; and I might pay enough attention this time to make it to my destination (instead of looking for trouble).

The Legend of Zelda Symphony That I Dragged H1 To

Yep, it was some time in November when I dragged a poor, little H1 to that thing.

November 28th to be exact.

Much like our trip to the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds Symphony in April of 2011, there were people dressed up as their favourite characters but the best I saw had to have been the awesome tribute someone did as a Skull Kid from the best of the Zelda games (which of course is Mask of Majora).

However, unlike our trip to Distant Worlds, this Symphony was vastly different and not in a terribly positive way either.

The Highlights

1.  In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, the good people at Nintendo crafted this entire tour featuring the music of the fantastic Zelda series.  It was the same for the 25th Anniversary of Final Fantasy and I couldn't be happier.  Both series shaped the type of games I enjoy playing now, and gave me a greater appreciation for music of its kind.  I'm sure I spoke at length before about my adoration of one Nobuo Uematsu but he's not the only one to thank.  The great Koji Kondo, composer to the Zelda series helped create the tone and indeed, the world of Hyrule and beyond.  The fact that the opportunity was afforded to be in attendance to hear musical genius realized by a full orchestra is a highlight enough.

2.  I saw Stephen Totilo and Jason Schreier of Kotaku at my show! They sat one row in front of me but more to the left of me but not too far away that I couldn't hail them.

3.  The music was played absolutely beautifully.  The orchestra sounded better than at Distant Worlds and the acoustics at the Theater at MSG were quite lovely.

4.  The scenes accompanying the music from the various games in the Zelda series was well-thought out and put together.

5.  Ending the Symphony with music from The Mask of Majora? That's a damned plus right there even if it almost felt like an after thought.

6.  Whhhhaaaaa...??!! Conducting the Orchestra with the Wind Waker baton? I see what you did there...

Well-played (and I see what I did there).

7.  I would have rioted had "Lost Woods" not been played.  They're lucky... 

The Lowlamps

1.  This is not so much the music but the Theater at Madison Square Garden.  It's not that nice, which is sad.  It sounded great but it was not that comfortable.

2.  I did not shout out to Totilo and Jason at Kotaku.  I was playing Woobeewoo in that, "I'm shy".  It also meant I did not get to tag them in Streetpass.  It also made me miss Crecente.

3.  The Symphony itself while it sounded fantastic, as H1 rightly observed, it was not as fun.  This was not really the fault of the music selection though maybe that could be part of it but it was very much due to the fact that the musicians did their job and that was to read sheet music.  It was not played with feeling and there was no investment on their part into what was being performed.  At the very least in Distant Worlds the musicians truly had a keen interest in what was going on and the interactions from the crowd.  It made the FF concert that much more lively while this one suffered from a lack of personality.

4.  Musically, the song selections while not...horrendous, there was a lot overlooked and could easily have been included to make it not as somber as it felt at times.  I did not mind the inclusion of many of the Ganondorf battle music but what about the exploration? Some of it was there but not a lot...fantastic dungeon music, forest temples, and even some of the other minor bosses' music was overlooked.  Any piece of boss music (save Ganondorf) from Wind Waker would have made the whole thing so much more entertaining.

It was a fun night overall, except for the fact I failed to get a blasted ocarina at the shop which was a complete mob scene.  It was one thing to not get an ocarina but it sold out right before I could have ordered and sold to some woman who did not even want to really buy one.  ::sigh:: Such is life, I suppose.  And maybe it was Karma paying me back for having the "opportunity" to order a Virtue's Last Reward pre-order bonus thing.  I don't know.  Let's not talk about it.

I think H1 had a decent time and I think it's safe to say these crazy Video Game Symphonies won't be happening again any time soon.  Awww, that kinda makes me sad...Ah well.  Maybe next 25 years...

25 Years

This year marked the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.  25 years!

I chopped some bushes and messed around Hyrule in the original game a long time ago but did not play my first game until Ocarina of Time.  I know! It's a terrible confession, isn't it?

Since then, I've played most of the games that followed with my favourite game of all time being The Legend of Zelda: Mask of Majora. 

Quick Nerdish Sort of Note

It's been a week and a half since H1, BH and I trekked to Midtown ON A SUNDAY (ugh) to participate in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS Launch Event.

And of course, there was a freakin' line.

We went on a scavenger hunt to find gold skulltulas, or uh, rather, H1 and BH went on a scavenger hunt while I waited in line for a keychain (yay?) along with my pre-ordered copy of the game.

That...does not look like the gold skulltulas in the game... I call shenanigans!

We did not stay for the drawing of the prize, making all of H1's hard work useless.  But you know, H1, you had fun looking, right?

I did not take a lot of pictures there and really, what did I do then?

Of course, all that was required of me was to take one picture and even that I mucked up.

Well...it was worth it because I got the game on launch day allowing me to register for the limited edition commemorative cd collection.  Right? Yes.  It was not a total loss.

Plus, I am enjoying my game a lot.  A lot.  The details of that I will wait to bore you with at the End of Year review.

Anyway... H1, BH and I will also take away our childhood memories from the trip.  Or at least, BH will have fond, childhood memories of it all.

Memories...and some Shake Shack burgers.

There's probably one other character in my gaming nerdity that I love more than Link. Link is so adorable, with his little green hat of which I am a little green over and wished I always had. From a horse, to a boat to rail, Link continues to entertain and the LofZ series continues to be one of the most amusing, well-thought out gaming mechanics adventure ever to be created.

Like a Loser?

Usually, I'm on the ball. Well, okay, not always.

But in 2006, the day pre-orders were being taken for the Nintendo Wii, I was on it!

The day I picked it up, a week after its release, I walked in there and claimed my Wii much to the annoyance of people in the store desperately trying to get one.

Just about every day for almost 2 years after that, the line outside Nintendo World for the Wii was long due to the high demand of the Wii and the unavailability of the system. Even on days when those people had no right to be standing on line because it was in stock at other stores, they stood there.

In the cold.

In the rain.

In the hot sun.

In the normal weather. Yeah, sometimes the weather was tolerable.

And every day, H1 and I would pass by and shout out, "You should have pre-ordered!" Eventually we would pass by and say, "Okay, now you're just being lame. Go to Gamestop and get one! It's like a 3 minute walk from here!".

The day has come.

The day I might be the tool waiting in line outside Nintendo to buy a DSi.

Just. like. a. loser.

Now, mind you... I can easily go tomorrow and pre-order. There's still time for that.

I can go on to Amazon and pre-order. There's still time for that.

But I'm hoping against all good sense that a The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks comes out with a limited edition bundle. While I highly doubt it since a golden Triforce (ooo...gaudy) edition was already released for the DS Lite, I'm going to do the something-tells-me-it's-a-stupid-thing stupid thing, and wait.

I know those assholes are going to release one in Japan and not here. Isn't that always the case? Don't the Japanese hate me? Yes, yes they do.

Anyways, come Saturday at Midnight, Nintendo World will be open until 2 AM, so you can be the first to pick up your new DSi, and I won't be one of those people.

If Beetchie were here, we'd make another jaunt of it probably, even though she might trying to "yoink" my new stylish DSi and toss me her Lite.

But it's okay, Beetchie... if Link doesn't pan out, and the rumoured re-release of Final Fantasy VI does, and it comes in a bundle, I'll get that so you can swoon. But! Only if Kefka's on the DSi. I don't want those other effer's on my DSi, unless you know, it's like the Phantom Train, Gau or Edgar Figaro or something.

From Me to Me

Every year for the past 3 or 4, I've been getting myself something for Christmas. The first it happened to be that I was searching frantically for copies of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, found them at a 'decent' price and bought them.

Those purchases happened around Christmas, so H1 took it upon herself to wrap up my games, stuck them under the tree and made me write out tags "From Me, to Me" much to my dismay.

Since that time, she has insisted that she wrap things up that I get for myself and put them under the tree if it happens in the month of December.

Last year, she did an expert job of using the scraps of paper at the end of the gift-wrapping sessions and used them to fancy up my Radiohead Discbox of "In Rainbows".

The year before that I'm fuzzy on and don't recall what it was, if anything at all.

So I just wanted to ask H1 if she had any intention of wrapping up my Ultimate Collector's Edition of The Nightmare Before Christmas 15th Anniversary Set I got recently (number 15, 483 of ?????).

I think that'd just be wrong of you, H1. It's September. Don't you be wrapping up my shart!

Speaking of shart, where are my Christmuth Liths from previous years? Weren't we supposed to post those on here to show my ridiculousness (in your opinion)?

I've been playing The Legend of Zelda series for quite some time now. Granted, I did nothing more than chop bushes when I was younger when I took the role of Link on the NES.

But I've graduated.

I'd like to think that I'm now what H1 would call a Zelda Connoisseur.

At least, this is what I thought until tonight.

Can someone explain to me WHY I am having one hell of a time getting my drawing of the Triforce to register on the DS?! I've been at it for at least 15 minutes now and if that area was not in a safe zone, my Phantom Hourglass sand would have run out 6 minutes ago!

I'm pretty sure my rendition of it should should open that gd red door in the Ocean King's Temple!!!!!

How could I not know what the Triforce looks like?! I've one pinned to my bag that I see 7 days a week, for fuck's sake!

ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

My confidence as a Zelda expert has been shaken.

And the red door remains closed.

By the way - if you listen closely after I draw my triforce, the "nuh uh, fuck you, you got it wrong" buzz can be heard and the words on the screen are "nothing happened".

For future reference (because you know, it only took me 45 minutes to do), the PROPER way to draw a triforce is to start at the top, go left, stop middle, draw to the right, extend that line diagonally going left, then up left, complete the left side of the triangle, draw the bottom, then from the bottom, draw the right side of the triangle - back to the top and there you have it.

Why am I logging this?

Because the next time this shart happens, I want to be properly prepared!

If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that there's always a next time for bullshart!

70 hours + and Counting

I've been meaning to post on this for a while but I figured I'd finish LofZ first before I said anything.

Nintendo Wii is goo'd times.

I feel sorry for all the losers who should have pre-ordered. Even that MC, even though that was awesome that you stayed outside all morning in front of Nintendo World to get yours.

When it came to the Wii, I did not mess around. It was pre-ordered on the first day reservations were being taken and picked it up the Sunday after I got back from London & Scotland. I feared for my life when all those kids were staring at me all hateful like as I walked out of Nintendo World but ah, the smirking.

I know, I'm evil.

The HOchieS and friends have had fun with the Wii thus far. We played many hilarious nights of Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (I cannot wait for Beetchie to come around tomorrow so I can hand her ass to her in Paper Sumo Wrestling. Har Har except I best shut up before she lays the two-toed smack down on me), Wii Sports (especially that damned boxing) and I've logged about 70 hours on The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess.

I finished it and though it was a good game, I felt it wasn't as fantastic as they made it out to be. I did, however, have some goo'd time moments with Midna, Wolf Link and my favourite Archery Take Downs and the really scary moments that gave me night terrors when those evils dropped from the sky.

Bughie J. tells me I did not love the game as much because I'm now a Zelda expert as I've played too many in that series. I suppose that's partially true... Still, it was good. You know how I love my Hottie Adult Link. And how can you not? Let us look upon him together:

One last message to Link: you know, if you held on to the Master Sword, bullsheet would stop happening to you, right?

So, yes, it's cool walking by Nintendo World most mornings and seeing peeps lined up for their systems but like HOchie 1 says every time - "Losers, you should have pre-ordered."

2006 - Fun Times With The HOchies List

Anyway, of the albums I got this year and mind you, some of them weren't released this year but they were new to me, here they are and the songs that were best from them:

Death Cab for Cutie

We Got the facts and We're Voting Yes - so far disappointing and I can't even pick a song from here yet but I will listen again in the near future

Something About Airplanes - "Bend to Squares" is a fantastic song. Other than that, this album is another I'll need to listen to because so far it's boring as heck. Sorry TD5.

Transatlanticism - "Tiny Vessels", "Title and Registration"

Audioslave

Revelations - "Shape of Things To Come", "Moth", Wide Awake

With no tour planned for the year after the album came out, I don't know what's going with Audioslave. They had one of the worst songs this year, "Original Fire". I cringe everytime I hear it. This album, other than those three songs, is mostly forgettable and that is painful for me to say. Sweet D., you can keep him even though I still love you, T.M.

The Streets

The Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living - "Can't Con an Honest John", "The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living", "When You Wasn't Famous". This is another not-so-great album after the golden greatness of Mike Skinner's first two.

Tool

10,000 Days - "The Pot", "Vicarious". "The Pot" is one of the greatest songs this year but Tool, why are you making me add you to the list of not-so-great overall?! Maybe if you stopped your bullshit pretentiousness, then you'd make an album that wasn't one long boring song and an extension from your last! Geez.

OK Go

OK Go - "Get Over It" (Hilarious video and amazing song), "Hello My Treacherous Friends" (I like the bit about the spider children. I don't understand it but I like it as long as they're not Hobo Spiders, that is. Right X?), "1000 Miles Per Hour"

Oh No - "Oh Lately It's So Quiet", "It's a Disaster", "Maybe This Time". I took a chance on this band this year starting with this album and loved it so much that I forced them upon SF (but you know you should be thanking me, right, SF?), made enemies with Hinder and went out and bought OK Go's first. This is a really fun album and they seem to be a fun bunch of guys who are really about their fans and that's always a plus.

Thom Yorke

The Eraser - "Analyse" (One of the best songs this year!), "The Clock", "Harrowdown Hill". Thom Yorke, that loveable freak. I liked this album well enough. Oh and "The Drunk Machine" from the Harrowdown Hill EP is pretty good too.

Arctic Monkeys

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - "Dancing Shoes", "Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But...", "Mardy Bum", "You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me".

Okay, so I stayed away from this band realizing how hyped up they were as soon as they came out until of course, a 7 hour flight to London and a broken pair of Ipod headphones forced me to make use of Virgin Atlantic's In-Flight Entertainment Service. So, I listened and actually liked it. It's not to be taken seriously, the whole thing's about how to hook up on the dancefloor (yeah, let's say the Arctic Monkeys can write only as well as, well, Arctic Monkeys. But ah, the lyrics and music are fun so whatever) and wow, do they like long titles.

Mindless Self Indulgence

Another Mindless Rip Off - (it truly is but at $8.99 and my undying love for this band, I had to get it. They know we're idiot fans who will buy anything but we know it too so it doesn't make it better but it makes it something) "Born to be Beheaded", "Frying Pan", "What Do They Know?" remix by MSI VS. Julien-K. & Chester Bennington

Shut Me Up: The Remixes + 3

This was truly disappointing! I mean, I rushed out to buy it for MSI's cover of "Big Poppa" because if you've heard their covers of "Tom Sawyer" and "Bring The Pain", you'll agree with me that MSI can cover a song like nobody's business but ugh, I was so sad and unimpressed by "Big Poppa". It wasn't horrible but it wasn't A+ material either. It was rather boring.

Despierto Los Ninos - "Alienating my Audience", "Joke", "Wack". And these songs are examples of why I love them because they're self-loathing, fan-hating, fun time bitches.

Keane

Under the Iron Sea - "Nothing in My Way", "Leaving So Soon?", "A Bad Dream". Thanks to some drugs, Keane released a stellar album this year. The entire thing is amazing save maybe one song I refuse to listen to. They would have made number one on my list and heck knows they're really close to being at that spot but of course...

MUSE

Black Holes & Revelations - "Map of the Problematique", "Hoodoo", "Take A Bow". I'd be a traitor if I didn't have them as the most revered. But in all honesty, had they not made an incredible album, Keane would have taken this one. Every track is great except for that damned "Knights of Cydonia" that I hate but absolutely love in concert. And "Invincible" which grew on me because it's also great in concert.

[Personal Message: Matt, I love you. Please send me tickets and VIP passes to your show at Wembley Stadium on June 16th of next year. No one got tickets for me even though I pleaded that that was the only present I wanted for Christmas. Bitches.]

But talk about another hideous album cover...

For those of you who missed receiving a copy of this c.d. from me or TD5 this year, no worries...as soon as their concert dvd comes out, you're all getting one.

Now for my list of the shows (concerts & broadway) I saw this year starting with the best and ending with the worst:

1. MUSE at Wembley Arena. "Assassin (Grand Omega Bosses Mix)" is the most bad-assed performance in concert I've ever seen and/or heard.

2. Mindless Self Indulgence (tied with below) - oh how I love Jimmy. Within two years, baby, I'll have Urine tattoed to my foot. This was my first real pit. I'm alive. Barely. If not for Beetchie and Jess, I wouldn't be posting right now.

2. Evil Dead The Musical (tied with above) - great because X got roughed up.

4. Spamalot - I like Lancelot; he likes to dancealot. And he was pretty hot.

5. MUSE @ The Hammerstein Ballroom - small venue greatness because I was close to my man and fun because now SF is hooked.

6. Franz Ferdinand @ The Hammerstein Ballroom - as my Budgie would say, "if it's free, it's for me" and then there was the Alex moment.

7. Wicked - There's nothing like a gOOd-lOOkin' flying monkey. Yes, it is possible.

8. Les Miserables - the slo'mo' death scene was hilarious even though I don't think they meant it to be. The flush was just damned lame.

9. (and now for the worst show, please view two blogs before this one) Matisyahu. That's right, MC. Matisdamnedyahu.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons...

Today was fun, despite high blood pressure inducing torture. Sitting around doing nothing in the company of HOchie 1 is good times, although there was something about work having to be done.

How The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages & Seasons Made A Liar Out of Me

I believe I said there'd be an update as to how the present situation went down soon after Christmas yet it's the 20th day into the New Year and not a goddamned thing was posted since December 24th...Of LAST year. Meh.
Everyone was happy with what they got, I think. Hochie or 2 has been rockin' the Hot Rod DS and "Animal Crossing" everyday. I only this week rocked one of my new sweaters. Rocked or looked like a clown? Hmmmmm...
Good times have been had with the watching of newly acquired DVDs including "Firefly" and "The Muppet Show - Season One" and still more to watch. Too many DVDs and not enough time but you cannot get anymore quality than "You and I and George" or "I Never Harmed an Onion...". Apparently, Ralph is the best Muppet and I never knew. Also, another thing I've discovered - the Muppet Show is not for children.
But what I've been truly rockin' is that damned Zelda series. For whatever stupid reason, probably the one involving my stupidity, I never got those games when they were out. Four years later I was struggling to find them at a price that was not 100+ dollars a piece. Bottom line, I found them and man, they're hard but ridiculously cool and fun. I'm playing the games linked so Ganon gets to own me at some point...uh, I mean..I will own Ganon (after multiple deaths) at some point.
And thanks to the LofZ, there have been no updates.
Nothing much going on yet so much of it, it's madness.
Work has been busy for Hochie Or 2 leading to nights of no 6.15 train.
My friend S is off to new and exciting things and I wish her the best of luck. 15 months seems like quite the while but I hope and I'm sure it will be, the most awesome frickin' times eva'.
And now to bring the blog mood down -
we found out today this guy we saw once in a while who worked at the hair salon was killed by recklessness & idiocy on the part of a 24 year old drunk driving bitch of a girl. Although The HOchieS never spoke to him, we always thought of him as the cute, quiet, shy guy who came across to us like a complete sweetie. We loved that guy. It's really horrible and it's hard to think about the fact that we'll never see him again... =(

I just spent an hour filling up a shopping cart at a certain online store in preparation for a certain costume for Halloween and presents for a friend for Christmas. I got to the end of all only to realize Halloween is only 6 business days away. With UPS ground (you know, the cheapest of all options) that'd be 5-10 business days... Lame. So I tried to check my options for priority mail and they wouldn't give me a total right now. Looks like I'll be making a trip downtown on Monday, if not sooner. Haha, yes. After all that fuss, you'd think I was screwed but no. I can always make the trip downtown to the store. I can still be screwed, mind you. What if they don't have the products I need?

The downtown store is not Chinatown therefore the Pai Mei costume is out. I will not be making a Halloween tree this year, hanging candy bags off it, sitting near the tree and distributing one knock to the heads of children who get greedy and try to take more than one bag of candy. Sorry to disappoint all who got wind of my Pai Mei idea but not really, I didn't go around telling people and getting them excited. Thank you other HOchie.

Most days during the week i.e. for those days when the HOchies have food to take to work, a comment for the day is marked on the food container with the HOchies name and date then put into the fridge. Each comment relates to whatever we have going on that day. And from now on, this blog will contain the luncch comment for the day so that we may remember the gOOd times. Or ponder why we wrote that to begin with...

As for the title of this entry - I'm off to glide from boko baba to boko baba, jump INto some trees, cut down some bushes (and collect the rupees within because you know, those monsters totally lose money under the bushes all the frickin' time. I have to say though, they're quite poor. 1 rupee, pssssshhhhh), fall off ledges and drown in the river. All because I needed to take a nap.
